Bake sale makes voting even sweeter in Cleveland Heights

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — If you voted today, you probably waited in line, but some Cleveland Heights voters didn’t mind the delay as an elementary school’s parent-teacher association made the task even more pleasant.

Voters in Northeast Ohio cast their ballots at the polls Tuesday. Cleveland Heights, they also chose their treats.

“We joke that you voted it was time to eat cake. You have done your civic duty. Celebrate and do good at the same time,” said Alexa New, president of the Canterbury Primary School Parent-Teacher Association.

For decades, the Canterbury Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association has held a bake sale on Election Day to raise money for the elementary school.

“We fund field trips, classroom grants for all of our teachers and classes, student programs and teacher and staff appreciation,” New said.

Last year, they raised about $1,000, which helped fund more than six field trips for the students. This year, they aim to double that amount. Erica Wigton, principal of Canterbury Elementary School, says she has about 340 students and field trips enhance their academic experience.

“Our fifth graders go to the Science Museum every year to learn about sound and light, and that’s exactly what they learn in the science department. So learning about another field gives them life, which is why they love school. They love coming to Canterbury. And the teachers are really doing a great job of making sure that we can make these global connections, connect to the content,” Wigton said.

This year they offered 40 different sweet and savory options including cupcakes, cookies, brownies, snack boxes and more.

While teachers, parents and children participated in the bake sale, students continued to learn about their civic duty.

“Voting is something you love…choose what’s best for you and your family and what you want for your country,” one student said when asked what he learned.

As voters arrived and purchased their gifts, the Canterbury PTA reminded everyone that even on Election Day, dessert is something we can all agree on.

“We don’t even need to know how you voted, but please come support us. Buy some cake, grab a box of popcorn. If you stay up late, watch the results and support our school at the same time,” New said.

The PTA also accepts donations to ensure poll workers are fed. If you would like to support the bake sale, it will continue until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday or until they are sold out in the Canterbury Elementary School gymnasium.

As of 4:30 p.m., they have raised more than $2,700, nearly triple what the PTA made last year.
