Ipswich Town News: Chairman Mark Ashton on his new role

Mark Ashton says he is “thoroughly enjoying” his new role as Ipswich Town chairman, having stepped into the role following Mike O’Leary’s retirement this summer.

He joined the club as managing director in July 2021, just after owners ORG completed their takeover of Portman Road, and subsequently appointed Kieran McKenna as manager in December 2021.

Speaking about his new role on BBC Radio Suffolk’s The Blue Hour, Ashton said: “It’s not that different, to be honest with you. I could still do with a few more hours in the day, a few more days in the week.

“I really enjoy it. This place has become a real home away from home for me. I love the city, the county, the people and above all this incredible football club.”

Ashton was asked if the intention was for him to become club president in the long term or if the club were looking for someone from outside, adding: “No, it’s long term. It’s a team of management that runs the football club.

“Things haven’t really changed since I took over. I worked with Mike O’Leary for many years, he’s a first class guy, but it was just a natural progression in the workload I was doing and in the way we operated and ran the club.

“Those who know me know that I care passionately about this football club. I will give my last breath to defend this football club.”
