Best Native Irises to Plant in Fall: 5 Colorful Species

Known for their colorful flowers that often bear detailed markings, irises are among the most popular cottage garden plants. As a former professional gardener, I have grown many different species belonging to the Iris genus, ranging from flamboyant bearded irises in borders to miniature varieties for potted displays.

There are over 300 species of iris growing around the world, most of which are native to Europe and Asia. However, there are 28 species native to North America, many of which are rare or endangered. As many of these native species grow in fragile ecosystems, such as grasslands, swamps or wetlands, it is important, where possible, to cultivate and care for these special irises.

So if you think about what native plantation to add to your yard, why not consider some of the best varieties of unbearded iris found throughout North America? Our guide has all the information you need, including planting tips for getting them in the ground and establishing them during the fall months.
