Winnipeg Jets notebook: bounce back from first loss and Kyle Connor’s strong start – The Hockey Writers – Winnipeg Jets

After 10 games, the Winnipeg Jets remain at the top of the NHL standings even after losing their first game of the season. At this point, everyone feels like they’re ready to go and enjoy the early season success, and who can blame them? This is something that doesn’t happen too often.

From the last notebookthe Jets played four games and much of what created the early success remained. That said, as the season goes on, it becomes easier to see some of the things that need to be adjusted. The best mindset a good team should have is: “How can we improve?” » even after winning nine of their first 10 games, and the loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs left many people asking that same question.

That said, the Jets continue to get results, and you can’t argue with that. The way they achieve results may not be completely sustainable, but accumulating so many points before November gives them time to make adjustments later while still having some breathing room. Here’s what happened last week.

Winning streak comes to an end

The Jets fell 6-4 to the Maple Leafs on October 28, ending their first eight-game winning streak. It wasn’t the ending Jets fans had hoped for, but it was bound to end eventually. The game ended up being more exciting than it seemed after the Jets went down 4-0 in the second period.

Kyle Connorwho we’ll talk about later, had an incredible match to come closer than it really should have been. He had two goals and two assists and almost single-handedly brought the Jets back into this game. A John Tavares hat trick ended up being the difference, but a loss is a loss no matter how wild the game.

Maybe the first loss is a good thing, although I’m sure a lot of Jets fans are having a hard time with it being against the Maple Leafs, but it might take some pressure off the team . They probably thought they had to be perfect going forward with all the spotlight on them from all the major media outlets and the league itself. Without the burden of remaining undefeated, perhaps this is how they can play to their strengths a little more and find a way to keep winning.

Bouncing back after the first defeat

There were questions about how the team would perform after losing the first game of the year, and they showed up in a big way. The Jets came in and beat the Detroit Red Wings 6-2 on track to get back in the win column.

Connor was once again leading the way in terms of who made an impact, adding to his team-best point total with a goal and two assists to move into a tie for fifth in NHL scoring with 17 points. His assist in the first half was also his 500th career pointadding to his list of accomplishments. He was outstanding offensively early in the season, recording at least one point in every game the Jets played.

Neal Pionk also found the scoresheet twice against the Red Wings, bringing his season total to 12 points in 10 games. Pionk and his defensive partner Dylan Samberg had a game to forget against the Maple Leafs, as they were on the ice for five goals. The duo rebounded well in Detroit, controlling both chances and shots on the ice.

It was one of the best all-around efforts from the forward group in recent games, and it starts with the top line of Connor, Mark Scheifele and Gabriel Vilardi performing like a top line. They dominated the Red Wings five-on-five, scoring three goals and easily winning their minutes. If they can find a way to maintain this pace, the Jets will have no problem winning hockey games with their offense.

The power play, which filled some holes in the game at even strength, continued its reign of terror, adding another goal with the power play and remained atop the NHL leaderboard with a success rate of 44 .8%. It’s probably terrifying for other teams to think about what this team could accomplish with this power play if the even-strength play improves, and the game against the Red Wings was a taste of that.

First Line rewards Arniel for staying with them

After losing their first game of the season, many wondered about the possibility of new lines after being relieved of the pressure of being undefeated. That fire was fueled by Scott Arniel shaking things up to get back into the game against the Maple Leafs, uniting the different players the fans were clamoring for.

Well, as the Jets took the ice before their game against the Red Wings, the old lines emerged from the visitors’ tunnel and at least started the game looking the same as before. The trio of Connor, Scheifele and Vilardi remains Arniel’s go-to on the top line, and historically, that has posed some problems for the Jets. Before the game against the Red Wings, they had been outscored 9-2 at five-on-five.

Now, to give credit where credit is due, that top line put together a really productive game against the Red Wings and rewarded Arniel for sticking with them. The three-goal effort from the line brings that gap a little closer, now to 9-5, but it’s still a work in progress. Maybe it was Arniel’s desire to separate them when they needed a reset, but this trio seemed motivated to prove to the coach that he should keep them together. The staff will likely want to see this on a consistent basis, but it was a welcome sight in the short term.

Up Next – One more before returning to Winnipeg

The Jets are one game away from the end of their short road trip, visiting the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday, November 1 for a 6:00 p.m. faceoff. After that, they return home for a four-game homestand, starting Sunday, November 3 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. There will be big tests for the Jets in the coming week with some very good competition.

After such a strong start with a somewhat lighter schedule, how will they stack up against some of the best in the league? Well, if their game in Detroit is any indicator, they might be back on track to continue winning games at a decent rate.
