Auston Matthews, first big game of the season, Canadiens battle against Capitals in Thursday’s best bets

On Thursday we have another strong NHL slate with seven spooky matchups that should keep every hockey fan happy on Halloween night. The Leafs are coming off a massive 6-4 victory, handing the Winnipeg Jets their first loss of the season. Toronto looks to get things going by returning home to face the Kraken.

Other exciting matchups feature the Oilers traveling to Music City to take on the slumping Predators and the Hurricanes hosting the Bruins in a key matchup between two of the East’s best teams.

We’re hoping it’ll be another solid day since we shared our picks last night, but we’re still 15-9 over our last 24 picks.

All betting lines are from Bet365 and are subject to change. Hockey is a difficult sport to predict, so play responsibly.

Bet: Canadiens Capitals Over 6.5 goals (-110)

The Habs have won three of their last four meetings against the Capitals, but Washington is red hot with victories in six of their first eight games to start the season. Their biggest improvement has been the offense which has maintained its positive goal differential this season with an average of 3.88 goals per game, which ranks in the top seven in the NHL.

They will have the troubling task of having to slow down a young Montreal team that regularly manages to find its offensive rhythm against them with three or more goals in four consecutive games against Washington. The offensive story in this game goes even further as the Canadiens and Caps have combined for seven or more goals in nine of their last 12 meetings.

Not to mention that Montreal should start Cayden Primeau in net. The Habs’ seventh-round pick in 2017 has a 4.02 goals-against average in five starts this season and has allowed four goals in his only career start against Washington.

Bet: Auston Matthews Anytime Goal (-125), Leafs Over 3.5 Goals (-120)

Matthews hasn’t had as much of an impact for the Leafs this season, as he ranks fourth on the team in goals (4) and points (8) through ten games. We’re expecting a big game from the Leafs’ new captain, as he hasn’t scored multiple goals in 13 straight regular season games dating back to last season.

Matthews has six goals and five assists for 11 points in his six career games against Seattle, including two games where he scored multiple goals.

The Kraken have faced starting goaltender Joey Daccord in three straight games, meaning they will likely turn to backup Philipp Grubauer. The 32-year-old has a 1-3-0 record and a 3.10 goals-against average this season.

Grubauer’s history against Toronto should also be good for Matthews as the German goaltender has just one win, a 4.23 goals-against average and a .877 save percentage in his last five games against the Leafs.

Bet: Penguins Ducks Over 6.5 goals (-110), Sidney Crosby scored anytime (+135)

The Penguins fell apart once again after losing six straight games. This is the 12th time in the last three seasons that the Penguins have suffered losses in three or more consecutive games, including the third time of five or more consecutive losses. Pittsburgh’s defense is currently the worst in the NHL, averaging 4.27 goals against per game.

Surprisingly, the Ducks are much better in this category with a 2.78 goals-against average, putting them in the top seven in the league. The Penguins will need to find an answer on the defensive end and fight their way through a strong Ducks defense if they want to end their long losing skid. It starts with the guys at the top, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

They will have to beat the Ducks with their offense, which hasn’t been bad as they are averaging three goals per game, which is tied with the Canucks for 19th in the league.

The two Pittsburgh hockey legends remain the biggest point producers, but Crosby has just one goal in his first 11 games.

He should get one in this favorable matchup since he has four goals and 11 points in his last 14 games against the Ducks. In their last meeting, Crosby scored and he should do so again on Thursday to end his goal drought.
