What to think about Auburn Tigers freshman quarterback Walker White

Quarterback Walker White was one of the prospects highlighted in the Auburn Tigers» Recruitment promotion 2024.

Expectations for the top 50 player 2024 classsand he was able to leverage his position to actively recruit top prospects to join him on the Plains. He’s probably part of the reason Auburn was able to overthrow wide receivers Cam Coleman and Perry Thompson.

Despite this, White seems to be overshadowed for several reasons. The first is that Hank Brown impressed before the season and won the substitute spot over him. This removed opportunities for reps.

White has not appeared in any games for the Tigers this season and his primary role has been on the scout team. This makes it more difficult for White to get practice reps with the other quarterback during the season.

Another reason is the potential top quarterback who recently committed to Auburn.

Deuce Knight, one of the top 10 quarterback recruits in the 2025 class, according to the 247Sportsswitched his commitment from Notre Dame to Auburn on October 2.

Freeze holds White in high regard, but providing him with the necessary work has been difficult.

“It’s a challenge,” Freeze said. “The good thing is that Walker is a personal motivator and you don’t need to ask him to work. He’s going to stay with you afterwards and do a little extra work with footwork drills and different drills that the quarterback coaches have for him. As far as getting quality reps this time of year, it’s very difficult.

As a true freshman, White has time to make a case for the starting job in the future. With Payton Thorne in his final year of eligibility, the position will be up for grabs. This could work out well for White in terms of timing, as this will be his second spring training with the Tigers.

“Everybody wants to play now, but the norm has never been that, especially at quarterback,” Freeze said. “It’s usually the second spring that they really start to flourish.”

Freeze had a good relationship with White, meaning White will be more likely to hear Freeze’s plan for him and remain patient instead of entering the transfer portal like many players in this situation would think.

“I spend a lot of time talking with Walker about the future, the game and leadership at quarterback,” Freeze said. “I don’t have to look for it, it’s easily available. »

With the race for Auburn’s starting quarterback position expected to be wide open in the spring, White will have the opportunity to show he’s the man for the job and can run the team’s offense.
