Invitation: 2024 Summit “What to talk about when we talk about cheating”

The Faculty Senate and the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) are pleased to invite you to the Cheating Summit 2024 “What to talk about when it comes to cheating” scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., in Coburn Hall, Room 255. This collaborative event will bring together faculty to address critical issues surrounding academic integrity and explore concrete strategies for maintaining honesty in today’s evolving educational landscape. , especially with the rise of new technologies like generative AI.

As student voices are essential to this conversationwe hope students will be able to attend to share their perspectives and participate in this important discussion.

Highlights of the provisional Summit program:
9 a.m.. — Opening remarks and welcome

A brief welcome and introduction to the importance of addressing academic integrity at an institutional level.

9:15 a.m.— Keynote: “Who is fooling whom? Reconsidering the value proposition of generative AI, higher education, and how we view students”

Speaker: Lance Eaton

This session explores how generative AI is reshaping education and challenges us to meaningfully engage with technology to better prepare students for the future.

10:30 a.m. — Panel Discussion: “Who Can He Be Now? Facing the Complexities of Cheating in College”

This panel looks at the causes of academic dishonesty and how rethinking pedagogy can reduce the allure of cheating.

11:30 a.m. — Lunch break

An opportunity for informal networking and conversation.

Noon — Roundtable: “The impact of AI on campus integrity and academic success”

Professors and computer science experts discuss the dual challenges and opportunities that AI presents for maintaining academic integrity.

1 p.m. — Session: “Managing and supervising academic integrity at UML: a campus-wide approach”

This session focuses on UML’s strategies for handling academic integrity violations and fostering a culture of honesty across all colleges.

2:00 p.m. — Final thoughts and takeaways

A summary of key ideas and next steps for strengthening academic integrity within the university.

This summit provides a unique opportunity to engage in critical discussions and explore how we can collectively address academic integrity issues while building a stronger community of trust and accountability.

We encourage faculty to bring their students to this important event, so that they too can participate in the conversation and share their perspectives on the future of academic integrity at UML.
