Environment Canada has issued weather advisories for parts of Vancouver Island, warning that strong and potentially destructive winds are approaching.

THE wind warnings were issued Tuesday afternoon for the North Island and East Island, from Nanoose Bay to Campbell River, as well as the Greater Victoria region.

On the North Island, southeasterly winds of 90 kilometers per hour with gusts to 110 km/h on exposed coastal areas are expected this evening, October 29, according to a warning.

Here, the wind should gradually ease by Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, on the east of the island and in Greater Victoria, the winds will only pick up on Wednesday morning and in the afternoon, with gusts from the south-east of 70 to 90 km/h on the exposed coastal areas and near Haro Strait, according to Environment Canada.

The weather agency says a Pacific frontal system is approaching parts of the island, bringing with it “very strong winds” that will eventually ease as the front weakens.

The system over the North Island, in particular, will be “intense”, it is said.

“Loose objects can be thrown by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds could lead to power outages and fallen tree branches,” the agency added.
