‘Tragic accident’: Driver released after fatal Melbourne schoolyard crash

A local Melbourne community is in shock following an incident on Tuesday afternoon in which a driver attempting a U-turn crashed into a school fence, injuring several children.
Police say the driver of the vehicle, from Hawthorn East, who was immediately arrested at the scene, was released overnight and no charges have been laid.
Reports indicate the driver suffered a medical issue at the time of the event.

The incident happened at Auburn South Primary School in Melbourne’s east after the 40-year-old mother had just picked up her child.

After unsuccessfully trying to turn her vehicle around, she went through a fence and crashed into a school table where a group of children were sitting.

An 11-year-old boy was taken to hospital but died on the way.

Four other children, aged 10 to 11, were also seriously injured and are currently receiving medical treatment.

“Tragic accident”

Police investigating the events leading up to the fatal car crash believe it was a “tragic accident”.
“It’s really difficult for everyone involved, from the community, the school community, residents, first responders, ambulances and police,” Inspector Craig McEvoy said.
“These events are always difficult when there are deaths and serious injuries, but especially difficult when there are children involved.”

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said the incident had cast a “dark shadow” across the state, sharing her thoughts with all those affected, while Opposition Leader John Pesutto declared that it was a “painful shock”.
