Why Oklahoma is moving freshman Isaiah Autry-Dent to help with the O-line

Youth is finally being served on the Oklahoma offensive line.

Due to growing injuries and lingering blocking issues, true freshman tackle Isaiah Autry-Dent will leave OU’s scout team this week as the Sooners continue to search for answers.

“We’re going to bring Isaiah Autry in and see what he can do,” head coach Brent Venables said Monday night on his weekly coaches show. “And then we’re going to continue to work hard to get better.”

The Sooners allowed nine quarterback sacks in a 35-9 loss to South Carolina, and last weekend they allowed 10 sacks in a 35-9 loss to South Carolina. 26-14 loss at Ole Miss.

Venables pointed out that three of those plays that were counted as sacks probably shouldn’t have been counted as sacks by the Ole Miss statistical team. Two were plays run by Jackson Arnold, and one was a 1-yard loss on a double pass to tight end Bauer Sharp where he chose the option to run it instead of throwing it.

Still, Venables had some choice words for OU’s offensive play Saturday at Mississippi.

“This is unacceptable,” he said. “Below standard.”

During his weekly press conference last week, Venables discussed the possibility of adding true freshman Eddy Pierre-Louis to the mix, and said the coaching staff was exploring options to play him or wear it in a red shirt.

Regardless, Venables said things needed to improve this season — and they did on Saturday, as OU compiled an SEC season-high 329 total offensive yards, scored two touchdowns in the first half for the first time in the conference and made four offensive plays. possessions of 60 yards or more.

But in the fourth quarter, with the Sooners down two touchdowns and clawing back, Ole Miss’ vaunted defensive front pinned its ears back and sacked Arnold six times on the Sooners’ final three drives.

“We have to find ways to help them and try to keep them out of these situations,” Venables said. “You know, some of the seven stages (drops), you stay out of the third and a very long time, which can potentially help you.

OU entered the Ole Miss game shorthanded as starting right tackle Jake Taylor was scratched and unable to make the trip due to injury.

And when starting left tackle Jacob Sexton went down twice with separate leg injuries and ultimately couldn’t return, redshirt freshman Logan Howland was called upon to replace him and dropped out a handful of bags.

Venables said on Saturday that the extent of Sexton’s injury was not yet known and Taylor’s availability would apparently remain in question.

With Taylor out, Michael Tarquin moved from left tackle to right tackle, so depending on how Autry-Dent performs in practice or how Howland continues to progress, it’s possible that Tarquin moves back at some point. Autry-Dent is a 6-foot-6, 303-pound true freshman from Fulton, MS. He was a consensus 3-star recruit at Itawamba Agricultural High School.

“Mike Tarquin did a good job,” Venables said. “He’s been really pretty good, you know? But some kids just aren’t playing with a lot of confidence right now and so they’re getting baptized a little bit. They also face very good players. And so, again, you have to find ways to try to help them and make them better.

“I really believe in the guys as to what their future looks like right now,” Venables said. “And we’re not playing very well there.

“So we’ll find ways to spend a little more time on some of these fundamentals. … We’re going to try to give them a little help with Isaiah coming there as well, to bring him (to the two depths).
