463 vehicles stolen in 31 days in Mississauga and Brampton, Ontario

A new month brings another wave of vehicle thefts in Mississauga and Brampton, with more than 400 cars, trucks and motorcycles reported stolen in the last 31 days.

This persistent problem, a major concern since 2023, continues to challenge local law enforcement and cause concern among residents.

Data from Peel Regional Police indicates that from September 27 to October 27, a total of 463 vehicle thefts were reported in the two cities: 258 in Mississauga, 204 in Brampton and one incident in Caledon.

This equates to an average of around 14 or more flights per day in the region.

As of Sunday, nine of the stolen vehicle cases have been solved, 438 remain under investigation and 16 are deemed unsolved. Of the vehicles stolen, 340 are cars, 109 are trucks, nine are motorcycles and five are listed as “other.”

While the total number of vehicles stolen this month is concerning, it represents a significant drop from The 568 incidents of Augustmarking a decline of 14.4 percent.

Peel Regional Police data also highlights two common hot spots this month where 13 or more vehicles were stolen:

  • Airport Road – 13 occurrences
  • Great Lakes Boardwalk – 22 occurrences

Additionally, analysis of car theft trends reveals that some areas are more vulnerable than others, prompting area residents to take extra precautions.

Peel Police have shared helpful tips to prevent residents from becoming victims of car theft:

  • If possible, park your vehicle in a locked garage, as most vehicles have been stolen from driveways.
  • use a steering wheel lock. This will also have a visible deterrent effect.
  • install a lock on the data port. This simple device can be purchased online and blocks access to the computer port thieves have access to to reprogram vehicle keys.
  • Consider purchasing a quality video surveillance system. Make sure cameras are properly placed and functioning for day or night use. Familiarize yourself with the system so you can view and access it immediately.
