A baby rescued overnight from a burning house in the city’s west end has died, while a woman remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Firefighters were called shortly after 1 a.m. to the home on Trethewey Drive, just north of Eglinton Avenue.

Crews found heavy smoke and flames on the back deck and inside the house. Images from the scene show smoke rising from the house and fire crews going to the roof.

Toronto Fire said many residents of the home were already outside when firefighters arrived.

Toronto Paramedic Services said they transported a pediatric patient with life-threatening injuries, as well as an adult with serious, possibly life-threatening injuries, to a local hospital. The other 4 patients were evaluated at the scene without being referred.

“On behalf of all the men and women of the Toronto Fire Service, I want to extend our deepest condolences to everyone affected by this extremely tragic fire, especially one involving a young child,” said Deputy Fire Chief Jim Jessop. Scene early Friday.

Jessop said six people were in the house when the fire broke out. The relationship between the woman who was evacuated from the house and the baby is not yet clear.

The cause of the fire is not yet clear

There is no statement yet about the cause of the fire, which is currently under control.

“The bulk of the fire was to the rear of the house but I will not speculate on the source or cause of the fire at this time. This will form part of the investigation,” Jessop said.

The Fire Marshal’s Office has been notified of the fire and the Toronto Fire Investigation Division and Toronto police will also investigate.

Jessop said it was too early to tell whether the fire was suspicious.

Fire crews remain on scene to check for hot spots.

A section of Keele Street in the area was closed due to the fire, but was later reopened.
