New funding planned for New York volunteer fire departments

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – New York firefighters have new tools to better meet the needs of your community.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced $25 million in funding for New York’s volunteer fire departments.

According to Governor Hochul, the state has 1,600 volunteer fire departments.

88 organizations receive funding to improve facilities, equipment, training and personal protective equipment.

“This is a new grant program, which will support firefighters across the state – large and small communities – and support facility improvements, and help you purchase this critical life-saving equipment that is extremely expensive, too difficult for individual companies to get made,” Hochul said.

$10 million in funding will also help cover the cost of training new firefighters.

Several fire departments in our region will benefit from this money, including the village of Saranac Lake which will receive $200,000 for new equipment.

Paul Smith’s Gabriels and Moira fire districts are also on this list.
