Dhanteras

On this day, it is customary to light 13 diyas, each with a unique meaning and location. Diyas are placed throughout the home: at the entrance to welcome prosperity and guests, in the kitchen to symbolize health and abundance, and in the puja room to honor the divine and seek blessings. Each diya embodies a specific blessing, filling the home with light and positive energy for the holiday season.

Choti Diwali

On Choti Diwalior Kali Chaudas, it is auspicious to light 14 diyas arranged in a thoughtful manner. Place 11 diyas around the edge of a plate with a four-sided diya in the center, which should be lit first, followed by the others. Adding a touch of sugar or sweets to the diyas symbolizes a wish for sweetness and prosperity in life, enhancing the blessings of the festival.

Diwali

On Badi Diwali, or Lakshmi PujaIt is customary to light many diyas throughout the house and yard, symbolizing hope for a bright and prosperous future. Many also light diyas on their balconies, sharing the joy and warmth of Diwali with neighbors and passers-by. However, never leave diya or candles unattended and make sure they are placed in a safe place away from objects that could catch fire.

It’s important to remember that these are just general guidelines and there is no one “right” way to light diyas on Diwali. Some may choose to light more or fewer diyas depending on their traditions and personal preferences. What matters most is lighting the diyas with a pure heart and a sincere wish for kindness and positivity.
