Pro-life advocates fighting to uphold Florida’s abortion laws gathered in Orlando to witness the results.

WPTV reporter Zitlali Solache was in Orlando at the Rosen Plaza Hotel to address those against Amendment 4.

John Stempberger, president of Liberty Counsel Action, said he and many others felt relieved that the amendment did not pass, allowing Florida to remain ban on abortion for six weeks in place.

He and others call it a victory knowing that Amendment 4 did not pass.

“This is an incredible victory and the essence of this victory is that Florida rejects extreme abortion policy,” Stemberger said. “This amendment would have allowed unregulated abortion in almost all categories.”

However, Stemberger and many pro-life Floridians were concerned about the amendment’s wording. They said terms like “viability” and “health care provider” were too vague and called the language misleading. They are also concerned about the financial consequences of the amendment on taxpayers.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re pro-choice or pro-life, it’s a bad amendment,” Stemberger said. “This does not represent the mainstream of what Floridians want when it comes to abortion law, and that’s why it’s going to be defeated in the election tonight.”

OBGYN Dr. Tamberly McCarus also lets her voice be heard on the proposed amendment.

“It just throws all safety standards out the window,” McCarus said. “This allows our state to be one of those states where you can abort your baby anytime, anywhere, for any reason.”

The amendment required 60 percent of voters to say “yes” for abortion protection to be enshrined in the state Constitution, but it got 57.1 percent.
