British Columbia veterans will ride public transit for free on November 11

This year, on Remembrance Day, veterans past and present will have the opportunity to travel free on public transportation.

BC Ferries, BC Transit and TransLink are all offering free public transportation on buses, SkyTrain and SeaBus in honor of the sacrifice and service of retired and active military personnel, the three announced in a joint statement Tuesday.

Eligible passengers will be able to board ferries, buses, SkyTrains and SeaBus at no charge.

In addition to current and former members of the Canadian Armed Forces, the offer also extends to British Columbia police, fire and ambulance personnel, members of the Canadian Coast Guard and officers of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Passenger fares will be waived if a person is traveling in their uniform or can provide their badge, military ID or veteran service card. Seniors traveling on BC Ferries will also be able to board for free on Remembrance Day, unlike other provincial holidays.

SkyTrain and SeaBus stations will be free for affected customers from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on November 11, with travelers able to board via the open, wheelchair-accessible fare gate provided for this purpose.

On buses, honored passengers can show their ID to the driver. Eligible passengers will not need to present their Compass Card for any travel.

Along with the free travel, all Canadian flags at BC Ferries terminals and on its ships will fly at half-mast throughout the day, while screens on buses, ferries and terminals will display “Lest We Forget” in the ‘honor.

At 11 a.m., SkyTrain, SeaBus and buses will observe a moment of silence, with all buses in operation expected to stop at their nearest stop as the hour approaches.
