1. Tea tree oil

Terpinene-4-ol, which is the main constituent of tea tree oil, has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Eucalyptus oil can have a cooling effect on the skin. This can help relieve the itching and discomfort associated with this condition. Keeping the skin hydrated is very important, as cracked and dry skin is a common symptom. “Applying this essential oil can also help moisturize dry areas and promote faster healing,” says Dr. Malhotra.

It contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties that can calm irritated skin. This can be helpful in reducing itchy and cracked skin. During research published in the Pharmaceuticals journal in 2023, topical application of chamomile was found to be equivalent to that of hydrocortisone, used for the treatment of psoriasis. Research suggests that chamomile oil could be used safely to treat psoriasis.

This oil can promote skin regeneration and help reduce scarring caused by lesions. It can also support overall skin health and reduce inflammation. Peppermint oil has a cooling property that can relieve itching and irritation. “It can also relieve joint pain associated with psoriatic arthritis, which is a type of inflammatory arthritis that sometimes affects people with psoriasis,” explains the expert.

How to use essential oils against psoriasis?

While it can be an effective way to soothe symptoms, you need to know how to use essential oils for psoriasis:

  • Dilution: Essential oils are very concentrated and should always be diluted in a carrier oil like coconut, almond or jojoba oil. A 2 to 3 percent dilution (about 10 to 15 drops per ounce of carrier oil) is sufficient.
  • Topical application: Massage the diluted oil directly onto the affected area 2 to 3 times a day, but avoid applying it to open wounds.
  • Soaking bath: Add about 10 drops of essential oil (diluted with a carrier) to a warm bath and soak for 20 minutes to soothe and hydrate your skin.
  • Scalp treatment: Mix the essential oil with a carrier oil, massage your scalp and leave for 30 minutes before washing.

  • People suffering from chronic respiratory diseases: The strong aromas of these oils can trigger respiratory problems.
  • Patients on medication: Some oils may interact with medications (e.g., lavender oil with sedatives). Consulting a doctor is essential before using essential oils to manage symptoms.
