Saskatchewan election: Parties argue over high cost of commissioners’ service hats

The Saskatchewan Party’s planned commissioner service was in the spotlight Thursday, as the NDP revealed the government paid more than $40,000 for fewer than 100 hats for the officers’ new uniforms.

NDP candidate Nicole Sarauer called the purchase “campaign hats.”

“The hats, as funny as it sounds, I’m not kidding,” she said. “It’s what we call a campaign hat. In July, Scott Moe’s administration approved a $41,000 contract to purchase campaign hats for the Marshals Service, which has not hired a single officer and has no plans for two years. »

According to the NDP, the cost of each hat is $587.

Saskatchewan. The party says the hats and vehicle stickers have already been ordered, and on Thursday party leader Scott Moe defended the purchase, attacking the NDP’s own crime-fighting strategy.

“Yes, they’re going to need hats, and I suspect people are buying their own doorbell cameras and that will be used as evidence by the police officers that we provide that the NPD would remove and provide doorbell cameras, one way or another. on the other, thinking that it will keep a community and a family safe. This is simply not the case.

NDP Leader Carla Beck said it’s a perfect example of why people are demanding change.

“That’s why people are asking for change, $40,000 to buy hats for a police department that doesn’t even exist yet,” she said.

The Saskatchewan Party says the 70-member commissioner service will play a supporting role to other police forces in the province, while the NDP pledges to eliminate the commissioner service and channel money to hiring more municipal police officers and RCMP officers.
