Sissons, Stamkos, Josi and Saros help Predators overcome Avalanche

Saturday night was a night of firsts in many ways for Nashville Predators in their 5-2 victory at Bridgestone Arena against the Colorado Avalanche.

Colton Sissons scored his first goal of the season, giving the Predators a 2-1 lead with 1 minute, 20 seconds left in the second period. Marc Del Gaizo got his first assist of the season on the score.

Captain Roman Josi followed with his first goal of the season, on the power play, with 14:45 left in the third to give the Predators a 3-1 advantage.

Cale Makar’s power play goal just three minutes into the second period gave the Avalanche a 1-0 lead. But Steven Stamkos’ power play score tied the score at 1 with 11:29 left in the second period.

Nathan MacKinnon’s goal with 2:16 left in the third brought the Avalanche within one point. But Filip Forsberg’s empty-net goal just over a minute later cut the Predators’ lead to two. Gustav Nyquist added another empty net for the final score.

Juuse Saros made 28 saves for the Predators (4-6-1). The Avalanche fell to 5-7-0.

Nashville had perhaps its worst performance of the season in Thursday’s 5-1 loss to Edmonton. The loss ended a streak of four consecutive games with at least one point. The Preds have one more home game, against the Los Angeles Kings, before a road trip in mid-November.

Colorado also had an uneven start to the season, although much of that was due to injuries and a bad October for goaltender Alexandar Georgiev.

Follow live updates from the Tennessean Predators game below:

Filip Forsberg and Gustav Nyquist each score empty-net goals to give the Predators a three-goal lead

Filip Forsberg scored an empty-net goal with 1:14 left in regulation to give Nashville a 4-2 lead. It was his sixth goal of the season. Gustav Nyquist added another to seal the victory.

Nathan MacKinnon brings the Avalanche within one point at the end of the third period

Nathan MacKinnon’s goal with 2:16 left in the third brought the Avalanche within one point, 3-2. It was his sixth goal of the season.

Roman Josi’s first goal of the season gives Predators 3-1 lead in third

Roman Josi added to the lead by scoring his first goal of the season with 14:45 left in the third period to give the Predators a 3-1 lead. Jonathan Marchessault and Steven Stamkos each got an assist on the play.

Colton Sissons’ first goal of the season gives Preds 2-1 lead in second

Colton Sisson scored his first goal of the season with 1:20 left in the second period to give the Predators a 2-1 lead. It was also Sissons’ first point of the season.

Marc Del Gaizo got his first assist of the season on the score. Zachary L’Heureux was also credited with an assist.

Steven Stamkos’ power play goal ties it 1-1 in second

Fifteen seconds after John Ludvig was found guilty of a 2-minute penalty against Filip Forsberg, Steven Stamkos tied the score at 1-1 with 11:29 left in the second period. It was his second goal of the season and he was assisted by Roman Josi and Ryan O’Reilly.

Cale Makar’s power play goal puts the Avalanche up 1-0 early in the second period

Twenty-two seconds after the Predators’ second penalty of the second period, Avalanche defenseman Cale Maker pushed the puck past Juuse Saros at 4-on-3 at 2:54 to give Colorado a 1-0 lead.

Filip Forsberg had barely taken his place in the penalty box for a holding violation when Makar scored.

Predators and Avalanche scoreless after one period

Aside from a few notable saves from Predators goalie Juuse Saros and one from Predators forward Filip Forsberg, the first period was virtually empty of action.

Nashville had 10 shots on goal to Colorado’s eight.
