Longtime Calgary broadcaster Darrel Janz dies

Longtime CTV Calgary news anchor Darrel Janz has died. He was 83 years old.

His death was announced in a social media post by a family member on Saturday.

Janz was a broadcaster for more than 60 years, including 50 years in Calgary, where he hosted CTV’s 6 p.m. news from 1973 to 2010.

After leaving his anchor job, Janz continued to work at CTV, launching a weekly series called “Inspired,” in which he profiled Albertans who had made inspiring contributions to the province.

According to his CTV bio, Janz grew up in the small town of Main Centre, Saskatchewan. After completing high school, he attended a teachers’ college in Regina. He taught for a year before embarking on a career in broadcasting with a job at CFAM Radio in Altona, Manitoba.

After stints in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Montreal and London, Ontario, Janz arrived in Calgary in 1973, signing a five-year contract to anchor news at CFCN-TV (now CTV Calgary). He never left.

Janz also taught broadcast journalism at SAIT for 11 years and at Mount Royal College for 15 years.

A memorial service will take place at a later date, according to the message announcing his death.
