Portage and Main reopening costs increase

The cost of reopening Portage and Main to pedestrians is increasing.

A new report from Winnipeg City Hall says the total budget now stands at $21.2 million, an increase of $8 million.

The report said only one company bid for the contract. He says the cost overrun is due to the “unique” nature of the project, the rushed schedule to complete it, as well as “market conditions.”

The city wants the intersection’s opening to coincide with major changes to transit routes starting in July next year.

The report states that if the project is approved, additional funding will come from street and sidewalk renovation budgets.

The Public Works Board is expected to vote on the new costs next week.
