This includes a new state-of-the-art leisure center, external to replace the existing facilities from the 1970s with a swimming pool, gym and fitness room.

Labor and Conservative councilors in Bedworth had previously united to urge the Government to cough up the £20 million.

“This represents the biggest investment in the future of this city in decades,” said Conservative councilor Damon Brown.

“To remove this would be to undermine the city’s aspirations.”

Ms Taylor said the budget, announced on Wednesday, gave her clarity after “weeks of speculation” and would make work easier for her constituents.

She added that she had met with the chief executive of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council to begin putting the plans into action.
