The vast majority of Oregon high school cross country teams competed Wednesday in their respective district championships.

The state cross country championships will be held Nov. 9 at Lane Community College.

Here are some of the best results from Wednesday’s action:

Someone is missing

Led by senior Sophia Malinoski, Lincoln won the Portland Interscholastic League girls championship with 37 team points. Malinoski finished first overall in 17:58.00, more than two seconds ahead of Grant’s Amelia Campbell in second (18:00.30). But the Cardinals were without Ellery Lincoln, who last competed in a PIL competition on October 16. Lincoln finished second at the state championship last fall and should be one of the top runners in the state this year.

Franklin, with 44 team points, came in second. The Lightning were led by Emily Robertson, who finished fourth in 18:50.80.

The kitchen wins without Tostenson

In typical Crater fashion, the Comets won the Midwest League championships with 21 team points. Tayvon Kitchen won his second championship title with a time of 15:23.50 — he was well ahead of teammate Ivar Hokanson’s 15:31.50 for second place.

But this time, Kitchen (the defending Class 5A state champion) was on his own without teammate Josiah Tostenson. Tostenson was the state runner-up behind Kitchen this fall and the state runner-up last year.

IMC duel until the finish

The Intermountain Conference women’s championship was a marvel, with Summit once again victorious. The Storm was led by Sophia Capozzi, who finished in 18 minutes, 32.50 seconds. She was several seconds ahead of Caldera’s Maddie Carney, who finished in 18:37.80. Carney had better times than Capozzi throughout the season, but the junior Storm took the lead in district competition.

The top 13 finishers in the IMC Championship competition came from either Summit or Caldera.

At the state championships, Summit will be competing for its 16th state championship in the last 17 seasons.

Boaz pleads his case

If anyone wants a shot at the Class 5A title Kitchen is defending, it’ll probably be Summit’s Hayden Boaz. The Summit senior won the IMC in dominant fashion with a finish time of 15:38.00 and no one else in sight. Mason Morical of Caldera was second in 16:13.10.

Schoenherr well ahead in SWC

Sheldon junior Malachi Schoenherr, one of the favorites in the Class 6A boys ranks, dominated the Southwest Conference race with a first-place finish in 15:38.25. He was well ahead of Yosuke Shibata of South Eugene (15:52.28) in second place. But the Axis won the team title after scoring 41 points, compared to Sheldon’s 49 points for second place.

Lincoln overtakes Franklin

The Lincoln boys were able to beat reigning Class 6A team state champion Franklin for the PIL crown on Wednesday. The Cardinals, led by Finn Lee, fifth in 15:44.70, came away with 59 points. Franklin finished the day with 61 points despite Brennan McEwen (15:24.30) and Zafer Courcelle (15:29.20) finishing first and second, respectively.
