LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – Fire crews are still working to contain the large grass fire that broke out in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Area.

Officials say the Rush Fire has burned more than 12,000 acres and is currently about 48% contained.

There are said to be 161 people currently assigned to the fire brigade, working with 26 engines, 2 bulldozers and several aircraft.

“We look for hot spots in everyone and one of the best ways to find hot spots is to take off our glove and smell and see if there are any heated embers,” said PIO of the Red Team John Nichols. “You’re not trying to burn yourself, you’re just doing it lightly when you’re feeling pain. Some of these things, teams will go ahead and do that to make sure there’s no more heat along from this side.

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge remains closed to visitors for safety reasons.
