Funny Little Boxes and Matt Webster of the Let’s Play All YouTube channel have announced their third collaborative pedal, the Dirt Distortion Pedal – which promises to recreate the guitar tones of Alice In Chains. Dirt record and more for just under $110.

The purpose of the pedal was to reproduce Jerry Cantrell’s sought-after guitar tones from Alice In Chain’s 1991 classic, with particular emphasis on These bones – a golden metal anthem hinged on an angular riff known for its shaggy but defined tone.

But this handy device does more than just encapsulate the sound of a specific song or album. Beyond that, Dirt offers the “crushing intensity, screaming lead sounds and throaty riffs” that epitomized 1990s metal, with its creators named as NooseSilverchair and Tom Morello When it comes to other sounds, this budget pedal can bring it together.

The pedal distortion comes to life via simple, interactive controls; Dirt for dialing in distortion, Volume for pushing the amp, and a three-band EQ. So while the pedal can be violent and aggressive, the collaborative minds behind its creation have worked to ensure that it is also very clear.

The “target tone” of These bones ends up with the Dirt dial around noon, and the volume at two o’clock. THE LowThe highs and mids should be pulled in a little past half.

The song solo tone is a different beast, and these sounds can also be expected to be picked up by the pedal. This can be achieved by maximizing the Dirt control, bringing the mids further back, and giving the Treble dial a slight nudge.

Webster says the development of Dirt experienced everything from “technical issues to hospitalizations”, and required help from Soundlad Liverpool’s Marc Dunberry and JSA Effects’ Simon Andrews to get across the finish line.

He also reflects: “It’s perhaps fitting that a pedal that pays homage to one of the darkest mainstream albums ever made would have such a tortuous development process. »

The pedal requires a standard 9V power supply and does not come with a battery compartment, which means daisy chaining and electric bricks are necessary to get these bad boys growling at your crankset.

Webster and Funny Little Boxes’ previous collaborations have bottled up the sound of Pearl Jam’s landmark LP, TenAnd Tones of Queens of the Stone Age by Josh Homme in equally small and economical boxes.
