Amplifying change: The Geneva Learning Foundation and Grand Challenges Canada increase the global health community’s knowledge on climate impact

Geneva, Switzerland – November 6, 2024 – The Geneva Learning Foundation (TGLF) and Grand Challenges Canada (GCC) are proud to announce a new partnership that will focus on transforming knowledge from the local health community in low- and middle-income countries into actionable knowledge about challenges urgent health issues posed. by climate change.

This collaboration aims to learn from the health community operating in areas severely impacted by climate change across the world. The aim is to use a global survey to understand the specific health risks linked to climate change and identify barriers to addressing these challenges, particularly in vulnerable communities. Through this partnership, GCC will ensure that its future calls for innovation are based on the needs of those directly addressing climate impacts on health.

Karlee Silver, CEO of Grand Challenges Canada, highlighted the importance of this partnership, saying:
“At Grand Challenges Canada, we are committed to learning from those on the front lines of health crises. With the support of global technology company Arm and the Government of Canada, we are working in partnership with the Geneva Learning Foundation to ensure that the knowledge and lived experiences of the local health community guide our pursuit of innovations tailored to unique challenges of climate change. induced health risks. »

GCC will join that of TGLF Teaching to Reach Initiative— a global peer learning network that connects more than 60,000 health professionals from over 80 countries — and this partnership will provide a platform for community health workers to share their experiences with the global health community. health. The majority (80%) of these health workers are locally based, ensuring that their ideas reflect the realities faced by those most affected by climate-related health risks, such as rising temperatures, increase in vector-borne diseases and extreme weather conditions. events.

In preparation for Teach to Reach 11, which takes place on December 5-6, 2024, participating health workers will provide critical information that will help identify health risks exacerbated by climate change and reveal the systemic barriers they face to adapt to these risks. . These ideas will shape the event’s agenda and discussions, ensuring that local perspectives are at the heart of the discussion. Broader engagement with the health community will intensify in early 2025 with the launch of a global survey, which will provide a foundation of crucial data that can guide future policy debates and innovation efforts.

The collaboration between GCC and TGLF aims to ensure that health workers’ knowledge of the health impacts of climate change informs our efforts to support innovation around the world. Grand Challenges Canada will leverage learning to shape future funding calls, accelerating the development of future innovations that are relevant, responsive and grounded in local knowledge and expertise.

Reda Sadki, Executive Director of the Geneva Learning Foundation, highlighted:

“By harnessing the collective wisdom of community health professionals, Teach to Reach accelerates progress on climate-related health risks. Through our partnership with Grand Challenges Canada, we are catalyzing community resilience through peer learning. Together, we empower local health workers to become leaders of change; facilitate rapid knowledge sharing, enabling them to quickly adapt and respond to emerging challenges, and transform shared knowledge into powerful actions for better global health.
