Hughes reaches 300 career assists, Canucks beat Ducks 5-1

Head coach Rick Tocchet says Hughes is a pleasure to coach and he wasn’t surprised by his milestone achievement.

“He obviously controls a lot of the game, (he’s a) special player, he makes a lot of shots, it’s hard to do, especially when teams are attacking you,” Tocchet said.

After the match, Hughes reflected on his accomplishment and paid tribute to all of his teammates who contributed to his success. The Canucks’ third goal was initially credited to Hughes, but it was determined that Elias Pettersson put the puck in the net and Hughes collected the assist.

“I’m glad Petey scored that (goal) because it doesn’t happen without him standing in front, it was a great display,” Hughes said. “I just feel very lucky. I’m lucky to have had great teammates, it’s been a fun six years and hopefully for many more.

Tocchet felt the keys to the game were controlling the puck and limiting Anaheim’s odd-man runs.

“All four lines contributed; I thought it was a well-managed match. To win this game (and we’re) 2-0 on the road, we learned a little bit from the San Jose game, and we had some good video sessions yesterday and good practice and I think that’s the key to this team,” Tocchet said.

While the Canucks were without Thatcher Demko to start the season, Hughes was impressed by the Canucks goaltending.

“For Kevin to come here and step up and be a rock for us, I mean, it’s been great, and Arty has been great too, we have a great tandem right now,” he said.

Goals

In the first period, the Ducks had an early power play and defenseman Olen Zellweger found the back of the net from the point to put Anaheim on the scoreboard.

With Vancouver running its own power play, Boeser connected on a Quinn Hughes shot from the point to bring the Canucks back into even terms.
