BROADCAST TRANSCRIPT:

We will not see changes to Florida’s marijuana or abortion laws.

Amendments 3 and 4 failed to garner sufficient support.

“We don’t have recreational marijuana and we don’t have women’s right to choose until they are viable,” said Aubrey Jewett, a professor at the University of Central Florida. “It just didn’t work.”

The campaigns for and against these amendments spent a lot of money and time fighting for each side. Jewett explained why he thought these amendments failed.

“The Republicans now have a big lead of a million voters in voter registration, Governor De Santis led a very vigorous and strong effort to defeat these amendments, and that Florida requires 60%, and here is why these two didn’t make it,” Jewett said.

Jewett said he doesn’t think this will be the last time we see these amendments.

“I think we might see some variations in the future and we’ll see what the proponents of these amendments have learned,” Jewett said.

Professor Vincent Adejumo of the University of Florida is not so confident.

“It will take outside groups that have considerable financial means, that can connect with the politicians here and also with the base to get the vote back on the ballot,” Adejumo said.

Adejumo said he thinks the Florida Democratic Party needs to rebuke its strategy to reach more voters in the state in order to see a shift to the left.

Statements released during campaigns:

OF THE VOTE NO ON CAMPAIGN 3:

“Even after spending more than $150 million – the largest amount on a drug legalization effort in American history – Florida residents saw through Amendment 3’s web of deception and defeated this take of corporate power.

“We are grateful for the unwavering support of Florida’s Governor and First Lady, whose conviction, courage and fearlessness – even in the face of Big Weed’s unprecedented $150 million money bomb – has been unwavering.

“Here in the Free State of Florida, we protect our children, our way of life and our Constitution.

“As drug legalization advances across America, your state better hope it has a governor like Ron DeSantis.”

FROM SMART AND SECURE FLORIDA ON AMENDMENT 3:

“Tonight, a strong majority of Floridians voted to legalize recreational marijuana for adults. We want to express our sincere gratitude to the majority of Florida voters who voted yes on Amendment 3 and to all those who supported us in this effort. We remain committed to advocating for a smarter, safer Florida and will continue to work to find solutions that benefit all Floridians. »

VOTE YES ON 4:

“Tonight, Floridians made their voices heard loud and clear, demanding an end to the state’s restrictive six-week abortion ban. With 57% of voters calling on lawmakers to repeal the law, the Amendment 4 fell just short of the 60% needed to overturn this law Florida’s near-total ban on abortion Without immediate action by the Legislature, Floridians will remain subject to a 6-week ban, a ban that will affect many. countless women before they even realize they are pregnant.

“Despite continued government sabotage, state promotion of disinformation, and anti-democratic attacks, the majority of Floridians still voted for Amendment 4. The people have spoken out and sent a clear mandate to the body Legislative: Repeal Florida’s extreme ban. Today’s results demonstrate the strong support for abortion access in Florida and only fuel our resolve to continue fighting government interference,” said Lauren Brenzel, director of Yes on 4 campaign.

We are incredibly proud to have supported the doctors, patients, and advocates affected by this ban. Our sincere thanks go to courageous women like Caroline, Deborah, Anya and Amber, whose resilience and strength have inspired millions of Floridians to support Amendment 4. Their stories, along with those of the countless women who will continue to suffer from cruel and extreme abortion in Florida. ban, remind us that our fight is far from over,” Brenzel added.

On behalf of our state’s patients, we call on Florida politicians to repeal this extreme abortion ban. With the most conservative presidential electorate in Florida history, a majority of Floridians voted for Amendment 4 because they believe in the freedom to make personal health care decisions without government interference. This clearly reinforces the nonpartisan nature of this fight and demands that Florida take legislative action to repeal the near-total ban on abortion. Our coalition partners are ready to hold our public officials accountable to the will of the people and ensure that the extreme abortion ban is overturned in the 2025 legislative session.”
