As results of 2024 presidential election began to trickle in, a rumor circulated that U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Democrat, said the Democratic Party wouldn’t do it. certify vote total if former President Donald Trump wins.

The alleged quote spread with a post from account @LarryDJonesJr, which included a video of Raskin purporting to make the comment. According to the X post, Raskin said: “Let people vote for Trump if that is their choice. But believe me, we will not certify the elections. He might win, but we’ll make sure he doesn’t set foot in the Oval Office.

Despite the post putting the alleged statement in quotation marks, Raskin did not utter those words. The X post video did not show him making the comment, and Raskin responded to the rumor on Xsaying it the fictitious “quote” is 100% fabricated.

The video came from a February 17 2024, panel featuring Raskin at a bookstore in Washington, D.C. The panel focused on a book titled A real right to vote“, which argues that U.S. lawmakers should attempt to add an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that guarantees THE right to vote. The book’s author, legal scholar Richard Hasen, was also on the panel.

Toward the end of the discussion, one participant asked about the practicality of Hasen’s proposed amendment and how it would be implemented. Hasen responded that he “does not trust the Supreme Court,” or other legislative bodies, to enforce the hypothetical amendment and, therefore, his book proposed legal provisions for its enforcement.

Raskin added that lawmakers must play “offense and defense” in order to protect the people’s right to vote, saying that for “the vast majority of American history, the Supreme Court has not been the friend of the people.”

The video in the X post mentioned above started after this comment. Here is what Raskin says:

But the court is not going to save us. This means that the only thing that really works is people moving and changing the Constitution. But again, it’s necessary but not sufficient – because what can be written into the Constitution can slip away very quickly, and the biggest example happening right before our eyes is Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which they only modify. disappear with a wave of a magic wand as if he didn’t exist, even if what he says couldn’t be clearer.

They want to submit it to Congress, so it will be up to us, on January 6, 2025, to tell the raging Trump crowds that he is disqualified. And then we need bodyguards for everyone and civil war conditions – all because the nine judges – not all of them – but those judges who don’t have many cases to review each year, not many work to do – huge staff, tremendous protection – just don’t want to do their job and interpret what the 14th Amendment means.

Despite Post X’s assertion, Raskin’s comment referred to Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Congress added this section to the Constitution in the 1860s to prevent Confederates who had left the United States during the American Civil War from holding office. In 2023, a court case in Colorado attempted to enforce this provision, arguing that President Donald Trump should not be legally able to run for president because of his role in the January 6, 2021 attacks on the capitol American. However, in March 2024, the The Supreme Court ruled Asset could remain on the ballot in Colorado.

Raskin made the remarks in question a few weeks before the Supreme Court’s decision. Based on his quote, he expressed support for such lawsuits challenging Trump’s ability to run for president, citing the 14th Amendment. He was not talking about the results of the 2024 presidential election, much less the certification of the vote totals.

In summary, Raskin did not say, “Let people vote for Trump if that is their choice.” But believe me, we will not certify the election. He might win, but we’ll make sure he doesn’t set foot. ” in the Oval Office.” The purported quote was misattributed.
