Rental golf carts could hit Victoria streets this spring

Next spring, tourists and locals could have a new option for exploring British Columbia’s capital.

HeyYa Rentals hopes to bring a fleet of 10 fully electric golf carts to Victoria.

“These are street-legal, low-speed vehicles,” said CEO Tasha Maynard.

The company launched last year in Vancouver, becoming the first of its kind in Canada, and Maynard said business is booming. The company is now heading towards an April launch date in Victoria.

“We love this city and think it’s a very natural move to expand,” Maynard said.

The City of Victoria has yet to issue a business license to the company, although the CEO says one of the only sticking points is finding a location for its operations.

“They will have to stay in one area,” Maynard said.

The carts can accommodate four, six or eight people and are rented for $26 per hour or $1,230 for the day. A driver’s license is required to rent one, and anyone who gets behind the wheel is subject to the highway code. Carts are insured by ICBC and approved by Transport Canada.

Golf carts turned heads in the capital on Tuesday when the company brought them to town for a demonstration. Several people told CTV News they approved of the plan to bring them to the city.

“It’s just, I think, a great idea,” said Linda Wallace, who was walking along Dallas Road in Victoria when someone passed her Tuesday.

“It would be super fun,” said Scott McGill who also noticed the strange vehicles.

“They look totally fun, with lots of bright colors,” said Tracy Marshall who was racing in front of one of the electric carts.

HeyYa Rentals says it is confident in its expansion plans in the Victoria market and has its eyes on other island communities, starting with Nanaimo, in the coming years.

“I think we’re going to have tremendous success,” Maynard said.
