Oilers host Indigenous celebration against Vegas Golden Knights at Rogers Place

The Edmonton Oilers will honor and celebrate Indigenous culture as they take on the Vegas Golden Knights at Rogers Place on Wednesday.

“This game provides our fans with the opportunity to learn about the history, culture and traditions of indigenous people, while honoring the important indigenous community and fan base right here in Oil Country,” said said Tim Shipton of OEG Sports & Entertainment in a press release. Tuesday.

Several Indigenous elders from northern Alberta will be honored at the game. Pre-match celebrations will include drummers and dancers. Three other Indigenous leaders from the world of sport will also be honored during the match.

On the ice, Oilers fans will be able to hear the Canadian national anthem in Cree and watch a performance by a Métis violinist.

Enoch Cree minor hockey players will be able to realize their NHL dreams by participating in a skills challenge during the first intermission.

“We value our long-standing relationship with the Indigenous community and are committed to deepening our understanding so that we can continue to honor and lead by example of inclusiveness within the National Hockey League and our community “Shipton said.

The Oilers 50/50 draw will support Spirit North, an organization that helps Indigenous youth access sports and recreation programs.
