Today is election day. Marion County voters will help decide national and state elections, as well as some key local elections, such as a new sales tax proposed to support school construction and improvements and a proposed 20-year extension of the existing 1% sales tax to fund public safety capital needs and highway projects. Polling stations opened today at 7 a.m. According to the elections office supervisor, as of 9:30 a.m., 19,113 people had voted. Check out Doug Engle’s photos from Tuesday morning:

Marion has 265,806 registered voters. Tuesday at 8:20 a.m., 55% of them had already voted either in advance or by mail.

During early voting, which took place from Oct. 21 to Nov. 2,101,946 people voted. Of these, 60,566 (59.4%) were Republicans, 22,113 (21.7%) were Democrats, 16,678 (16.4%) had no party affiliation, and 2,589 (2.5%) had an affiliation with another party.

Mail-in ballots must arrive at the elections office today by 7 p.m. As of 8:20 a.m., the elections office had received 44,322 absentee ballots. Of those, 18,219 came from registered Democrats, 18,030 from registered Republicans, 7,099 from voters with no party affiliation, and 974 from voters affiliated with another party.

Here’s how Marion County voted for president in recent elections:

2020: Trump won 62.4% of the vote in Marion County and Joe Biden won 36.6%.

2016: Trump got 61.3% and Hillary Clinton 35.3%

2012: Mitt Romney obtains 57.7% of the vote against 41.4% for Barack Obama.
