Pennsylvania county extends voting hours after ‘software glitch’ with ballot scanning

A Pennsylvania judge approved a motion to extend voting hours until 10 p.m. ET after a “malfunction” prevented Cambria County voters from scanning their ballots.

Election officials stressed that anyone who wishes to vote will not be turned away and that all votes will be counted. Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Whatley urged voters to get in line and vote regardless of the delay.

“The Cambria County Board of Elections learned early this morning that a software malfunction in the county’s electronic voting system prevented voters from scanning their ballots,” County Attorney Ron Repak said in a press release. “This should not discourage voters from voting in their district.”

“All completed ballots will be accepted, secured and counted by the Board of Elections. The County Board of Elections has installed an Express Voting Machine (sic) in precincts to continue to allow electronic voting, while allowing the manual voting,” Repak said.

All votes cast after the initial closing time of 8 p.m. ET will be by provisional ballot, the court ordered.

The Pennsylvania Department of State said it was working with local authorities to resolve the problem.

“The Department of State is in contact with Cambria County officials. Voters continue to vote by paper ballot, consistent with normal operations, while the county resolves the issue through scanning at precincts. We are working with the county to resolve this technical issue and remain committed to ensuring free, fair, safe and secure elections.
