India concerned over vandalism of temple in Canada amid arson of mosque in New Zealand

IndiaThe Minister of Foreign Affairs responded on Tuesday to the vandalism of a Hindu temple in Canadacalling it “deeply concerning,” as New Zealand Police said separately they were investigating an arson attack at an Auckland mosque.

“What happened yesterday at a Hindu temple in Canada was obviously deeply concerning,” Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar told reporters in Canberra, the Australian capital, during an official visit on Tuesday.

The incident occurred a few weeks after Ottawa expelled six Indian diplomatslinking them to the 2023 murder of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada. Canada has accused the Indian government of waging a vast campaign against South Asian dissidents in Canada, which New Delhi denies.

The incident increased tensions between Canada and India, as well as between Sikh separatists and Indian diplomats.

Two Hindu temples were also vandalized in Canberra last month, leading AustraliaForeign Minister Penny Wong said it was upsetting for members of the Indian community.

“People across Australia have the right to be safe and respected, people also have the right to peacefully protest, people have the right to peacefully express their views,” she told reporters .
