Southampton news: Be “proud” of your first Premier League victory

Finally. The moment we all needed.

We needed a bit of luck, but we managed it. Finally a victory in the Premier League which puts an end to 19 months of waiting.

It follows a busy but successful week for the Saints after progressing in the Carabao Cup to the quarter-finals on Tuesday night with a close and nail-biting victory over struggling Championship side Stoke City.

Confidence was indeed built after the dynamic, but ultimately unsuccessful trip to Manchester City, where Russell Martin quoted: “Today gave me even more confidence. But we have two huge weeks ahead of us, starting Tuesday.”

With Tuesday’s opponents Stoke busy (just) attentions turned to Everton. The one that really mattered. Once again we made things difficult and nervous, in true Saints style. Can you blame us after all this negativity and late concessions?

With three points finally in his pocket, the pressure was off Martin, although it was a minor respite. Attention will now turn to another crucial match at the bottom of the league. Wolves next host the Saints – the team that replaced us at the foot of the table and are still searching for that elusive first win of the campaign.

It will be another long week full of tension in the meantime, but we must enjoy this victory and be proud. Could this be a turning point? A win against Wolves would instill more confidence, but it’s important to remember that it’s just one win. It was a lucky escape. On the other hand, luck was against us with these marginal decisions.

Losing at Molineux would see us return to rock bottom and put the pressure back on, with the prospect of Liverpool visiting after the next international break.

This is a valuable victory. A basic element. In the words of Kyle Walker-Peters: “be calm and trust the process.”
