Rebels fail against Utah

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The UNLV men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams lost their dual meet to Utah, but came away with 11 event wins and 35 top-three finishes Friday at the Ute Natatorium.

The Rebels fell to the Utes 187-113 on the men’s side, while the Scarlet & Gray women’s team suffered the same fate by a score of 171-129.

THE DIRECTORY – WOMEN:

– Sophomore Ava Olson earned a victory in the 1,000 freestyle, hitting the wall in 10:16.20.

– In a one-two finish in the 200 freestyle, junior Erika Carlson took first (1:51.18) and senior Gina Miller followed right behind her in second (1:52.17).

– In the 100 backstroke, sophomore Dominika Trentkiewicz took first place with a time of 55.3 seconds.

– Freshman Lauren Palacios earned a victory in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall in 2:07.80.

– Carlson earned another victory in the 100 freestyle (51.47), while junior Averi Webb swam to third place (51.75).

– Webb added another victory in the 100 fly, with a time of 56.26.

– Continuing his dominant day, Carlson added his third victory in the 500 freestyle (4:58.75) while Miller finished second (5:01.13).

– The Rebels’ 400 medley relay team of Trentkiewicz, senior Heather Gardner, Palacios and senior Bridget Sullivan placed second with a time of 3:48.78.

– Freshman Grace Wharton had multiple second-place finishes, including in the 200 backstroke (2:03.42) and 400 individual medley (4:32.50).

– In the 50 freestyle, seniors Pilar Cohen (23.76) and Sullivan (23.91) placed second and third, respectively.

– The Scarlet & Gray 200 free relay team of Cohen, Webb, Carlson and Sullivan combined for a second-place finish in 1:33.54.

– In the 3-meter competition, fifth-grader Vika Yanovska took third place with 301.95.

– To complete the top 3 in the Rebel women’s standings, Gardner also added a third place in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.69).

THE DIRECTORY – MEN:

– In the 400 yard medley relay, the Rebel ‘A’ team consisting of sophomore Wikus Potgieter, senior Adnan Beji, freshman Emil Perez and sophomore Ambrus Barcsak started the day strong with a first-place time of 3:18.24.

– Taking the top two spots in the 100 breaststroke, Beji took the win with a time of 55.44 and senior Daniel Nicusan placed second (55.52).

– Perez took the win in the 100 freestyle, reaching the wall in 45.48. Additionally, he added a third place in the 50 freestyle (21.12).

– Sweeping the top two spots again in the 200 breaststroke, Nicusan took the win with a time of 2:03.81 and Beji placed second (2:04.80).

– Sophomore Tatsuki Inoue raced his way to second place in the 100 back (50.56) and 200 back (1:48.97).

– In the 1 meter competition, senior Dima Tereshchenko took second place with a score of 317.33.

– Senior Cooper Kiel added two top-three finishes, placing second in the 100 fly (49.82) and third in the 200 free (1:40.39).

– The Rebels’ 200 free relay group of Potgieter, Barcsak, Nicusan and Perez took second place with a time of 1:22.63.

– Junior Ian Belflower placed second (1:51.20) in the 200 fly, while redshirt sophomore Colby Raffel placed third (1:51.84).

– Senior McKay Mickelson in the 200 backstroke (1:51.83) and sophomore Alex Vasquez in the three-meter dive (344.48) added third places.

FOLLOWING : The Rebels face a quick turnaround with a dual meet against BYU on Saturday at 12 p.m. PT/1 p.m. MT.
