When it comes to clearing snow, Massachusetts Snow Plow Operators know how to do the job.

And that’s why the state is celebrating snow plows with the third annual “Name a snow plow” competition for elementary school students in the Bay State.

“As winter approaches, we are thrilled to announce that the third annual “Name a Snowplow Contest” now accepting submissions from elementary school students across the state,” transportation secretary and CEO. Monica Tibbits-Nutt said in a statement. “Every year it’s a fun opportunity for students to show off their creativity, and we can’t wait to see what names will be on our snowplows this winter.” »

Last year the winning names were Flower plowmanEdward Blizzardhands, Glacier Gobbler, Polar Pathmaker, Snow B Wan Kenobi, The Snolar Express, Sleetwood Mac, Snow Place Like Home, Snow-hemian Rhapsody, The Mayplower, Snow Monstah, Fast and Flurryous. These names remain on these plows.

“The Name a Snowplow competition has been a major success over the past two years, with excellent entries from schools across the Commonwealth” Highways administrator Jonathan Gulliver added. “This competition is a fun way for kids to learn about public works and for our snow and ice teams to connect with their communities.” We are excited to receive some creative names for our plows this year.

This year, the are 12 MassDOT (Ministry of Transport) snow plows to name but a few. Here’s how to participate.

How can you enter the competition?

THE MassDOT explained that students can fill out applications with their name for plows using an online portal: https://www.mass.gov/forms/name-a-snowplow-contest-submission.

Submissions must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday, December 6.

There is no limit to the number of applications which can be submitted by school.

When will the winners be announced?

The winning selections will be announced by Monday, December 23.

“A selection panel of MassDOT employees will choose two winners from elementary school classrooms located in each of the six districts of the road division“, according to MassDOT.

The winning applications will be evaluated based on two grade level categories:

  • Kindergarten through fourth grade;
  • Fifth through eighth grade.

What do the winners receive?

The competition winners will be invited to participate in a planned snowplow unveiling event.
