Shakib Al Hasan’s bowling action reported during County Championship

Shakib only played one game for Surrey

What is the story

Veteran Bangladesh versatile Shakib Al Hasan was reported for suspicious bowling action.

The incident took place during his only appearance for Surrey in that season’s County Championship.

Subsequently, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) requested an analysis of Shakib’s bowling action.

Despite his mammoth contribution of nine wickets in a match against Somerset at Taunton in September, umpires Steve O’Shaughnessy and David Millns raised concerns about his bowling technique.

Shakib’s move to Surrey amid player absences

Shakib’s association with Surrey was a short-term deal, agreed to bolster the team’s resources in their title race.

The decision was made when eight players were present England duty, including frontline spinners Will Jacks and Dan Lawrence.

Despite Shakib’s efforts, Somerset recorded a stunning 111-run victory which momentarily halted Surrey’s march to their third consecutive league title.

Shakib to undergo further tests, but not suspended

Although Shakib is not suspended from playing, he will have to undergo further testing at an ICC-approved facility in the coming weeks.

The news is shocking as his bowling action has never been questioned in his 17-year career.

A BCB official explained that “the matter (Shakib’s suspicious bowling action) has no connection with international cricket or domestic cricket in other countries.”

Shakib’s international career and political involvement

Shakib was rested for the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, saying he needed more time to recover.

His international career now hangs in the balance after protests followed his withdrawal from Bangladesh’s Test squad to face South Africa in Mirpur last month over security concerns.

Before that, he had been an MP in the long-standing Awami League-led government.
