Jaguars Pro Bowler reflects on crushing loss

Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Evan Engram spoke to the media in the locker room on Monday, and as always, we were there for it all.

To watch the interview, watch above.

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence also spoke after the game.

Q: On the team’s resilience at the end of the match?

Lawrence: “I was proud of the team; the way we fought and held on, and obviously we didn’t play well for most of the game, especially early on, and we kept fighting, we were resilient, and it’s tough , you know, you can find a way to get back in the game, and you have an opportunity, and it ends like this. But I mean, really, I’m super proud to be a part of this group, and there’s a lot of fighting, and we just have to find a way to finish these games. You know, we’ve had so many one-score games that haven’t gone our way, because some people play late in the game, and so it’s difficult.

Q: What was the aspect of the interception that sealed the game?

Lawrence: “Yeah, they were doing a good job mixing things up on defense. But, you know, (we) kind of started getting more men towards the end. We made some big plays. Just the one where we ran into (Jaguars WR Austin Trammell), took advantage of it and got there. And then, you know, it was kind of a play (based) on what we had done earlier, and we did some stuff with the running back and some option routes, and we tried to go above. And I just have to give credit to (Eagles LB Nakobe Dean) – who did a great job. (Eagles LB) Nakobe (Dean) did a great job making that play. And it’s just tough when it ends like that. You know, when I threw it, I thought we’d have a chance, I left him some contact inside, and (Dean) got his eyes back. You know, a lot of times these linebackers don’t look away and play the ball, and I thought we’d be able to go up and get it. And he did it – he did a great job. I made a beautiful piece.

Q: How can the Jaguars improve their slow starts?

Lawrence: “We’re going to look at everything, and it’s a problem, so it’s something we need to address. We didn’t do anything in the first half. It was just for one reason or another, there were several factors, but we need to improve on that. I mean, it’s just hard. I mean, obviously we gave ourselves a chance to come back and win the game, but we had to make a lot of plays our way, and we had to make a lot of plays and put ourselves in a tough situation. And you know, we shouldn’t have to do this every week. So, we need to think about this and how can we best start? How can we just move the ball, find a rhythm? It seemed like we were really stagnant in the beginning, failing to possess the ball and our defense was on the field a lot, so we need to improve in that area.

Q: On dealing with the first half and then having a chance. There are ups and downs but it doesn’t seem extreme to them at the moment?

Lawrence: “It was definitely extreme. I mean, if you look at our season, we had times where we didn’t play well, for sure, but it was really extreme tonight. But you have to take it for what it is. It happened. It was our offensive performance in the first half, and we need to figure out how we can improve. Yeah, it’s frustrating, you know, when we feel like we have an opportunity and we make the plays that put us in position to win the game. So it’s hard. I get frustrated and I know I always have to start with myself and what I can do best, and I can do a lot better. I didn’t do my best tonight and that’s really disappointing. It was a game we needed and we had a chance. And I just wish I got in the end zone at the end.

Q: On closing losses this year and how they remain positive?

Lawrence: “We’ve done a good job where we are. We are two and seven. There is no stopping in us. We fight every week, we give ourselves a chance and we don’t just make the last plays. There are obviously games that lead to this. It’s not just about one game, it’s about the ones that end, you know, all these scores in this league, it all comes down to the end. And we just don’t finish games. And we fight to get back there, like tonight, it was incredible. The guys didn’t give up, put the defense in a bunch of bad spots and just fought to give us a chance and they did. And then we finally started doing it on offense. But I’m just, I probably look obviously disappointed, I am. I’m not disappointed with our team and the way we fought and the effort and everything that was done. Honestly, I’m really disappointed in myself and the way I played. I felt like we didn’t give us enough of a chance to win. I didn’t feel like I did enough games, just things I couldn’t do. And I have to be better for us. So that’s what’s difficult now is I feel like if I do certain things better, we’ll win the game. So it’s a tough pill to swallow, but I have to take responsibility for it.

Q: On how he coped physically?

Lawrence: “A little beat up this time of year, but relatively good. So we will obviously evaluate tomorrow morning. Some pain sets in and we’ll see what we’re dealing with. But I was able to finish the game and I felt good. And I know there’s a lot of guys dealing with things, and we just have to keep moving forward. It’s that time of year, the middle of the season, and it’s tough.

Q: Why was he the last to leave the locker room after halftime?

Lawrence: “Just trying to make sure I’m good in the second half and doing everything I needed to do to prepare. So it took me a little longer to come out, but I got checked out and felt like I was okay to play, so it’s all good.

Q: How difficult is it to have so many changes in the offensive personnel?

Lawrence: “Yes, that’s a good question. It’s a challenge just because the continuity isn’t always there, but I have to commend these guys for being ready. I mean, the guys have stepped up, and it’s not easy. I hate that (Jaguars OL) Cooper (Hodges) went down today (due to injury), and it’s like he was playing really well, a young guy that had to step up and was ready to leave. And it’s like another injury, and it’s hard, and we just have to fight through it and stay together. And I think the guys are doing that, and they’re ready to play. You see guys who don’t get many reps because there are only so many reps, there’s only a short time in the week and they’re ready to go . The receivers obviously had to step up today, and these guys did and played. I mean, it’s hard, honestly, it is. It’s hard not to have the chemistry and the timing. But at the end of the day, I have to trust these guys, and I do, and they made plays for me, and I just have to constantly be better too. There are times when I just have to sit in there and throw the ball and make better throws. You know, I missed a few today and a big play on third down near midfield, one that happened in the fourth quarter at one point. So, I have to be better for them and just be the guy I need to be for this team.

Q: If he is worried that the team will start to accept the results of the matches?

Lawrence: “I don’t think so. I don’t think that’s the case. We play good teams, and we put ourselves in bad positions, and we always fight and have our chance at the very end. We are so close. So I think if the guys accepted that, or I don’t say that, you say stop, but the guys just accept that. I don’t think you would see that. I mean, the guys are extremely disappointed. I think it’s the same thing so many times this season that it’s frustrating because it feels like, honestly, we’re going to get through it. You’ve had this adversity, and this is the week we’re going to overcome it. And we thought it was the right week, and we didn’t do it, we didn’t finish it. So it’s frustrating, but we know it’s going to work out. We must continue to work. That’s all you can do.
