Newton North junior hitter Devon Burke at practice in August. The Tigers are No. 1 in the Division 1 tournament.Ken McGagh for the Boston Globe

The women’s volleyball tournament has started and the first round will end on Monday. See the latest scores here.

There are 197 teams competing in five divisions. Newton North, the number one seed in Division 1, is aiming for a hat-trick. Although the Tigers have graduated some star hitters the past two years (Abigail Wright and Chloe Lee), senior hitter Devon Burke and second-year passer Sasha Selivan are arguably the best duo in the state.

No. 2 Brookline and No. 4 Attleboro have an advantage in hitting depth, making them top contenders. Lincoln-Sudbury (No. 3), Needham (No. 5) and Barnstable (No. 7) are not far from finals appearances.

In Division 2, No. 1 Westborough hasn’t missed a beat despite earning two-time Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year Quinn Anderson. With senior Georgia Tyrell emerging as the top outside hitter and classmate Sam Norman, the two-time defending champion Rangers once again completed a season that would have gone undefeated had they not played at Newton North. The Hockomock is well represented here with No. 2 Oliver Ames and No. 6 Canton. No. 3 Billerica and No. 7 Longmeadow are undefeated.

Winner of Division 3 for the first time in 2023, Weston had a roller coaster season, but managed to take the top seed with almost the entire championship squad returning. Medfield, last year’s runner-up, is the second seed. No. 13 Shawsheen is the only undefeated player. No. 10 Dennis-Yarmouth and No. 4 Old Rochester have faced each other in three consecutive playoff series. If this happens a fourth time, it will be in the final.

Ipswich remained undefeated in the regular season as the Tigers seek its fourth consecutive Division 4 title. They come second after last year’s runner-up. Bellingham. The teams went to five sets last time. Another team that finished second as the opening seed this time around: Bourne in Division 5. Defending champion Mt. Greylock is the No. 4 seed.
