Followed by a windy and dry start to the week

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – This week starts off with dry and windy weather… This gives way to cloud formation and an increased chance of rain by mid-week. We are also closely monitoring a tropical system that is expected to move toward the Gulf of Mexico late this week.

This morning, outside, it is windy and cloudy. Temperatures are in the 50s and 60s. Winds will remain gusty from the east today and tonight. Clouds will be present mixed with some sunshine. Highs will reach the upper 70s to low 80s, with overnight lows in the 60s. Dry weather is expected today.

Election Day on Tuesday looks much the same. Sun and clouds in the afternoon with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s along with breezy winds. Lows will hover in the 60s with clouds and chances of rain.

A cold front will attempt to move through the region late this week, causing a slight increase in rain chances. Another player in the forecast later this week could be the tropical system we are tracking that is expected to enter the Gulf of Mexico later this week.

Watch the latest live and local weather data below, streaming on WSFA Weather Now! Please note that this stream does not include live severe weather coverage, only data on the latest weather conditions.

Tropics Tracking: The western Caribbean Sea is being closely monitored, where a group of thunderstorms will likely become a depression or tropical storm over the next few days. From there, a trajectory towards the Gulf of Mexico is likely. It is still too early to determine a precise trajectory or landing point, but some details are starting to emerge.

It probably won’t become a major hurricane. The water in the Gulf of Mexico has cooled and some wind shear is likely to develop over the Gulf as the week progresses. We expect this to become a Category 1 tropical storm and/or hurricane and then weaken as it moves north.

This *might* bring us some much-needed rain! Depending on the precise path, widespread flooding will likely fall on some places that really need rain. Will it be Alabama? It’s too early to tell, but it’s certainly possible.

The timing is in the second half of the week – if we were to have local impacts, they would occur between Thursday and Saturday. Again, that’s a big if. There’s no reason to worry at this point, just something to watch out for.

Until then, things remain basically the same today until Election Day on Tuesday. Highs warm into the 80s, with nighttime lows in the 60s and mostly clear skies.

A breath of cooler air will likely arrive in the state by the end of the week and into the weekend. Bring it on!
