A student was “violently” arrested after she stripped down to her underwear “to protest” against the strict dress code imposed on women in Iran.

The student, who has not been named, had her dress torn by Iranian self-defense forces because she “did not wear a headscarf” inside Tehran’s top Islamic Azad University.

The video shows the woman taking off her clothes and going out into the street in her underwear after the fight with the Basij on Saturday afternoon.

She walked around campus grounds — sitting on a stair railing for several seconds — before being taken into a car by men in plain clothes, another video showed.

University officials said the woman was “under severe stress and mentally ill, and was transferred to a medical center.”

However, Masih Alinejad, a journalist and women’s rights activist, said the unknown woman had been “harassed by the morality police at her university.”

“She transformed her body in protest, stripping naked and marching across campus – defying a regime that constantly polices women’s bodies,” she added on X.

“Her act is a powerful reminder of Iranian women’s struggle for freedom. Yes, we are using our bodies as a weapon to fight a regime that kills women who show their hair.

A source told the student leadership AmirKabir Newsletter that the unidentified woman suffered “serious physical violence” as well as “profuse bleeding” after hitting her head against a column or against the car door. One of the car’s tires was covered in blood.

The student was taken to an unknown location and no further information on her condition or whereabouts has been given since.

Police have not yet commented on the incident, but Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that a student wearing “inappropriate clothing” had “stripped naked” after security guards told her “calmly” to comply with the dress code.

The Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) said the student was not challenged for wearing a hijab but for using her cellphone to film people without their permission.

In Iran, women must wear a head covering and loose clothing in public under the country’s ultraconservative Islamic system of government. Failure to comply – a violation that is not entirely consistent, activists say – can lead to prosecution.

The Iranian branch of Amnesty International called for an “independent and impartial” investigation.

Iran“The authorities must immediately and unconditionally release the student who was violently arrested after removing her clothes to protest the abusive enforcement of compulsory veiling by security agents,” the statement said. charity said on X.

“While awaiting her release, the authorities must protect her from torture and other ill-treatment and guarantee access to her family and lawyer.

The incident Iran has been shaken by protesters for more than two years. after Mahsa Amini, 22, died in custody after morality police accused her of violating the dress code and arrested her on a Tehran street.

Bare heads appeared all over Iran as women ripped off and burned their headscarves, refusing to put them back on, even as police cracked down violently.
