Monday morning, the day begins with a bang with five London Metro lines hampered by delays.

Sections of the Circle, Hammersmith and City and District lines are all experiencing serious delays, with minor delays also affecting another part of the District line.

A signal outage in Whitechapel is causing these delays. While vandalism on the Waterloo and City line has caused minor delays on the key commuter route.

Things could certainly have been much worse, given that a wave of strikes was fixed paralyze London for most of this week. After the rain railway union, RMTcalled off industrial action, leaving only Aslef workers on the picket line. However, this means that virtually no metro services will run this coming Thursday or Tuesday (November 12), as staff protest for higher wages amid long working hours.

A crash near Gatwick Airport means motorists face five miles of congestion and more than 30 minutes of delays on the M23 this morning.

Emergency services and traffic officers are present, National highways said.

What is traffic like on UK roads?

The motorway network has so far been spared any major problems this morning – a relief for all motorists preparing to face Monday morning’s traffic.

However, there are some isolated problems on some of the country’s busiest roads, including the M40 – usually the darling of motorists.

  • M40 – Heavy congestion at junction J11
  • M62 – Highly congested junction J25 J24
  • M1 – Moderate congestion at the exit of junction J23
  • M6 – Small delays due to vehicle breakdown at junction J17

Delays on Great Western Railway trains

If your journey involves Grand Ouest railway services, prepare for disruption between Berkshire and Hampshire.

Indeed, a breakdown on a train between Reading and Basingstoke is wreaking havoc on journeys – and it is expected to last until the morning rush hour.

Trains cannot run between Reading and Basingstoke before 10am.

If your train is late, you may be entitled to compensation or reimbursement for the delay. So it’s worth noting journey times, keeping your ticket if it’s printed and checking with your train operator.

Wait, are the London Underground strikes still happening?

Yes and no. You may have read last week that the planned strike to freeze London throughout November has been called off.

But this is just industrial action planned by the RMT, Britain’s main rail union. The work stoppages of ASLEF, which represents tens of thousands of train drivers, will continue.

You can find out all about when the strikes will take place in the coming weeks here.
