Ruud van Nistelrooy yet to discuss his Manchester United future with new boss Ruben Amorim

Ruud van Nistelrooy remains uncertain about his future at Manchester United as he continues his tenure as caretaker manager with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea, pending talks with new manager Ruben Amorim. The draw provided some respite from United’s difficult season, although it only leaves them 13th in the Premier League table with 12 points.

Van Nistelrooy, who stepped in after Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, said he was yet to speak with Amorim, who is expected to take up his post at Old Trafford on November 11. Amorim, who currently manages Sporting Lisbon, is expected to bring his backroom team with him, leaving the Dutchman’s role at the club uncertain. Van Nistelrooy joined United as Ten Hag’s assistant last summer, but it remains unclear whether he will be retained in Amorim’s squad.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Sunday’s draw, Van Nistelrooy reflected on his current position: “It’s special, I’ve enjoyed every second and I will for the moment. I’m here to help and I will support the new manager. Everyone at the club is focused on the two games. After that we support him and work hard to make United better every day.

With no final decision on his role, Van Nistelrooy suggested talks were likely in the coming days. “I think over the next few days and weeks we will talk about everything. I’m waiting for that,” he said. Known for his success as a former United player, Van Nistelrooy returned to the club as an assistant, putting his previous head coaching aspirations on hold .

Under his temporary leadership, United showed signs of improvement, particularly in their organization and attacking play, which had suffered under Ten Hag. Bruno Fernandes’ successful penalty put United level in the match, but missed chances prevented them from securing all three points.

“I’m slightly disappointed that we didn’t get the victory,” Van Nistelrooy admitted. “We had the best chance. Marcus hit the post, Bruno in the last minutes. Overall, the performance of the players was fantastic.

Van Nistelrooy praised the outstanding performances of Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, highlighting the team’s commitment and connection with the fans. “It’s a good group of players, a good group of people. They left everything on the field. You saw the connection with the fans, that’s what we’re looking for,” he added.

As Amorim prepare for his arrival, Van Nistelrooy’s future remains uncertain, with a possible role on Amorim’s staff or elsewhere on the table for the 48-year-old. For now, he remains focused on his goal of helping Manchester United save their season.
