William’s visit to South Africa to highlight Earthshot Prize

The Prince of Wales will have a high-level meeting with the South African president during a week of events in Cape Town, highlighting the Royal Earthshot Prize.

William’s audience with Cyril Ramaphosa has been described as a “follow-up” to Mr Ramaphosa’s state visit to the UK in 2022.

The two men will sit down for talks and will be joined by Foreign Minister David Lammy, in the country for a meeting with his South African counterpart Ronald Lamola.

The future king begins a four-day visit to Cape Town on Monday, participating in a series of events highlighting young African climate activists and the fight against illegal wildlife trade, culminating in the ceremony Earthshot Prize ceremony on Wednesday. .

William’s visit begins with an event with young environmentalists from across Africa and Southeast Asia who are participating in the inaugural Earthshot Prize Climate Leaders Youth Program.

Antony Phillipson, British High Commissioner to South Africa, said ahead of the royal visit: “I would just like to emphasize that we are delighted to have the Prince of Wales here this week for Earthshot Week, and we will take the opportunity to do some bilateral events with him and for him.

He added: “We see this as a follow-up to the state visit… which we continue to see here as a very historic moment between the UK and South Africa. »

The high commissioner categorized the royal family’s diplomatic role as the “highest level you can engage” and the policy behind any given event would be carried out through follow-up engagements from ministers of the government.

Dubbed the prince’s “Super Bowl” moment, Wednesday’s awards ceremony will recognize environmental solutions to “fix” the planet and will be broadcast to 50 African countries with a potential African audience of millions, and screened in line.

Cape Town’s Table Mountain and other landmarks will be lit green during the city’s four-day Earthshot Week, which William will attend, and 1,000 community stalwarts have been invited to the ceremony in recognition of their efforts.

The Earthshot Prize green carpet has been a staple since William first hosted the awards ceremony three years ago in London, then in Boston and Singapore last year.

Guests were invited to “re-wear” their wardrobe or highlight African designers to highlight the importance of local talent and sustainable fashion. Arrivals on the famous footbridge will be broadcast live on the Earthshot Prize YouTube channel, with hosts Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and Moozlie. .

The awards ceremony will take place in a reusable dome which has been used for a number of events, with the production ceremony creating around 650 jobs locally. It will be opened by composer and singer Lebo M, performing Circle Of Life from The Lion King in a pre-recorded performance from the summit of Table Mountain.
