MotoGP title rivals clash but ‘don’t understand why we have to be enemies’ | MotoGP

Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin have given their thoughts on their battle for the lead in the Malaysian MotoGP Grand Prix, with the latter calling it an “incredible battle for history”.

The pair started side by side on the grid, with Bagnaia on pole and starting Turn 1 in the 19-lap Grand Prix at Sepang.

Over the first three laps there were 11 overtakes between the two men to take the championship lead with it on the line.

Bagnaia eventually prevailed and won his 10th Grand Prix of the season by 3.1 seconds, reducing Martin’s championship lead to 24 points to force a final showdown.

Martin’s opinion during the battle was: “It was a great race. I really enjoyed it.

“Thanks to Pecco, because even though we were so aggressive between the two of us, there is still this respect.

“We don’t want to run to destroy each other’s race. We both want to win. So, I think it was a good show for the fans.

Bagnaia felt the fight was “on the edge” but saw no problem with it.

“He was stronger in the fifth corner, he was gaining a lot there,” Bagnaia said.

“But I was very strong in all the corner entries. And I think that to surpass me, to attack me, he had to exceed the limit.

“I saw twice that he lost the front again and the fight was very, very limited.

“But I was very good at braking and in the last corner I always pushed as hard as possible, and it was the right strategy.”

Bagnaia said after the race that he did not intend to back Martin in the chasing pack as it would not have been “fair” in their fight for the championship.

The tough battle between the two men at Sepang and the resulting positive reactions typify the respect that has remained between the two men throughout their 2024 title battle.

“For me it’s very easy because I’m not the type of guy who wants to be rude off the track, and has to be rude on the track and aggressive, pushing, being the one who doesn’t respect my rivals,” Bagnaia said when asked how he maintains his cordial relationship with Martin.

“I’ve never been like that and I never will be. If Jorge starts doing it, I will change, but Jorge is more or less the same as me.

“So respect is surely the main thing and it always will be from my point of view. So I don’t understand why we have to be enemies off the track, not talk to each other or be rude.

Martin adds that this respect between the two men comes from their experience as teammates in Moto3 10 years ago.
