US urged to strengthen cooperation with China on AI

Amid growing competition in the development of artificial intelligence (AI), experts at the 2024 Beijing Forum highlighted the need to strengthen collaboration between China and the United States in the field of AI.

China and the United States are among the leading developers of AI, with top-notch AI labs and extensive language models outperforming their global counterparts, Graham Webster, a researcher at Stanford University, said during of a forum round table.

Webster said complete decoupling between the two sides would be a bad outcome. “There would be a big loss of efficiency and innovation,” he said.

He said the two sides should maintain a government-to-government dialogue on AI risks and security, and collaborate with a diverse global community, including academics and diverse cultural perspectives.

Furthermore, he said that leading countries like China and the United States must share the benefits, for example medical breakthroughs, derived from AI technologies.

Karman Lucero, a researcher at Yale University’s Paul Tsai China Center, noted the growing interest of scholars around the world in China’s progress in AI development.

Lucero highlighted the valuable lessons that can be learned from the Chinese experience, as China has an ecosystem in the field of AI that is dynamic and diverse.

Lucero said the best scenario for fostering mutual understanding and avoiding problems between the two sides depends on dialogue – not just government discussions, but also bilateral dialogues and people-to-people exchanges.

The United States has intensified its efforts to suppress China in recent years by implementing several measures aimed at limiting cooperation with China in the field of AI.

Last May, China and the United States held the first intergovernmental dialogue meeting on AI in Geneva, to exchange views on AI technological risks, global governance and other issues. respective interest.

Later in June, the second China-US Track 1.5 dialogue was held in Beijing, during which participants from the two countries reached consensus to further deepen cooperation in the field of AI.

Lei Shaohua, an associate professor at the School of International Studies at Peking University, called for efforts to prevent technology from causing economic fragmentation.

He said a “bottom-up” mode of exchange and cooperation between Chinese and American universities, think tanks, government research institutes and AI companies would become “ballast.”

Held at Peking University, the panel discussion on “Digitalization and Intellectuals: The Convergence of Multiple Disciplines in the AI Era” is part of this year’s Beijing Forum. The three-day academic forum which ends on Sunday brings together more than 500 experts and scholars from more than 30 countries and regions.
