I’m always on the lookout for good new horror movies and have consumed virtually the entire “best movies” list of 2024. However, there appears to be a late entry for what could end the year near the top , or at least in the coming months. the first 3.

That would be Heretic, which will be released in theaters in a few days, on November 8. Dozens of reviews have been posted, 83 to be exact, and the score has been increased from the 80s and 90s to a certified fresh 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film stars, among others, Hugh Grant, who would have an incredible role as a villain in the film. Here is the official synopsis:

“Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by an evil Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant), trapped in his deadly game of cat and mouse.”

This score places Heretic tied for third among the best horror films of 2024, although depending on your personal taste, you may elevate it to number one after seeing it. Here is the list:

1) Late Night with the Devil

2) Weirdness

3) Infested

3) In flames

3) Strange darling

3) Heretic

Yes, it’s a four-way tie for third place, although honestly I think Oddity is a bit overrated and would rate it lower than the others. I also liked Infested more than Late Night with the Devil and Strange Darling is currently my favorite horror movie of the year, although I guess you could classify this as more of a thriller. Either way, with those kinds of scores, Heretic is only a point or two away from #1, and it could get there as more reviews come in. Here’s a sampling of what critics like, again, mostly focused on Hugh. To agree:

• The spectator – “It’s nice to see Grant having so much fun. All those years as a rom-com star where it turns out what he’s best at is being completely bad.
• Hello guys – “Heretic has mesmerizing performances, eerie visuals, and carefully crafted dialogue. By casting Grant in this daring role, Beck and Woods bring a new voice to modern horror, making Heretic an unforgettable addition to the genre.
• Little white lies – “The heretic may seek to shake your faith in the divine, but it really strengthens the belief in Hugh Grant. »

Although Hugh Grant is the main attraction, all the performances are praised, notably that of Sophie Thatcher, whose notable role was in the still-running Yellowjackets. Her missionary counterpart is Chloe East, who I’ve never heard of before, but she’s also supposedly great. I can’t wait to see this for myself in a few days.
