A mother decided to fight her alcohol addiction after “humiliating” her daughter at her university graduation. Sharnie Yorke “thought it was okay” to drink a bottle of pinot grigio every night – because “everyone likes a drink at the end of the day”.

But the mother-of-two began relying on the drink to cope with her “difficult feelings” during her divorce and the departure of her children. Her daughters, aged 21 and 26, started begging her not to drink at night – but she decided to kick the addiction after drinking prosecco and cocktails at her youngest’s graduation daughter, which led to an embarrassing incident.

Sharnie, a healthcare assistant from Tenterden, Kent, said: “Graduating was a turning point – it was a huge embarrassment, I had so many regrets. My oldest daughter even told me that she didn’t want me to take care of my grandson. .

“I used to think my drinking was okay: everyone likes a drink in the evening, but not every night. It was clearly an addiction.”

After drinking prosecco cocktails and glasses of wine all evening, Sharnie remembers being “loud and belligerent”. While walking back to her daughter’s apartment, she fell, broke her arm and “smashed her face.” Her daughter wouldn’t let her back into the apartment and called the police and her older sister.

Sharnie said: “I remember the ride with the policeman. They said I was fine, but I had upset my daughters. I was taken to a hotel room for the night. When I got woke up, I had a lot of regrets.”

Sharnie was picked up from the hotel by a friend who encouraged her to go to the hospital for an X-ray of her arm. Doctors confirmed it was broken and she would need rest for six weeks. The mother-of-two says it was “the wake-up call she needed”.

She continued: “It was a huge embarrassment. I was really mortified – I knew (the drinking) had to stop.”

The 50-year-old said she was “always a big drinker” and grew up in a family who enjoyed a drink. She added that it was part of growing up and that she went to “a lot” of parties in her late teens and early 20s.

But as she grew older, her love of a glass of wine at the end of the day turned into a “compulsion” to drink the whole bottle, seven days a week. After a divorce and her children moved, Sharnie said she felt wine “filled a void” in her life.

She added: “The drinking has probably gotten worse since my daughters grew up and left home. I started drinking almost every night to fill the void. I went from a few glasses of wine a night to a full bottle. I was drunk all the time.”

The mom hasn’t had a drink since graduation day and has been sober for 106 days. She said: “Just the thought of that night made me want to never drink again. Not being able to see my grandson was enough for me to stop. I’m more present now – it’s nice to wake up It looks like I might be able to stay sober for the rest of my life.
