Guehi saves a point for Palace and extends Wolves’ winless run

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ wait for a first Premier League win of the season continued as they were pegged to an entertaining 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace to Molineux to get off.

Trevoh Chalobah gave Palace the lead on the hour mark, only for his error to allow Jorgen Strand Larsen for an equalizer in the 67th minute.

João Gomes then put Wolves in the lead five minutes later, but they were denied a vital victory by the Palace skipper Marc Guéhi.

He was alive to convert at the far post after Daniel Munoz had touched a corner. The draw keeps Palace four points clear of Wolves in 17th place.

Gary O’NeilThe side goes down after Southampton recorded their first win of 2024/25 against Everton earlier today, ahead of a huge match between the bottom two clubs in the division next week.

How the match went

Craig Dawson makes a shiny block to stay away Will Hughes‘ shot six minutes later, before Jean-Philippe Mateta had a glorious opportunity to put Palace ahead. He had the goal at his mercy after Chalobah fluffed his lines, but his close range volley hit his teammate.

Dean Henderson then refused Pablo Sarabia twice either side of halftime, diving at the Spaniard’s feet and later firing his shot in the face after good work from Matheus Cunha.

But Palace scored on the hour mark when Strand Larsen headed Hughes’ cross away from his goalkeeper. Jose Saallowing Chalobah to break through an unguarded net from an angle.

However, after Ismaila Sarr then squandered two golden chances to extend Palace’s lead, Chalobah missed Santiago BuenoThe looking pass, allowing Cunha to advance and allowing Strand Larsen to finish.

Munoz took advantage of static defending to give a corner to Guehi, who tapped into an empty net, and things almost looked better for Palace in stoppage time, only for Mateta to see a close-range finish scored for a fault on Sa.

O’Neil calls out defensive errors

The story of the Wolves’ season thus far has largely been one of defensive errors. In last week’s 2-2 draw against Brighton and Hove Albionthey became only the third team in Premier League history to score 25 goals in their first nine matches of a season.

After a disappointing start to the season, O’Neil was under pressure to earn a 10th win, but lax defense cost his team dearly.

Larsen took the ball away from his own keeper to give Chalobah a gaping goal for the opener, then Guehi gained the freedom of the penalty area to score Palace’s second.

Only once have Wolves gone more games without a win to start a top campaign, failing to win any of their first 14 matches in 1983/84, and they were subsequently relegated.

Next week’s clash with Southampton – who made a mistake in beating Everton 1-0 on Saturday – that’s an important score.

Mixed emotions for Palace

After going a goal down with just 13 minutes to go, with Wolves buoyant after turning the game around within five minutes of the second half, Palace could on the one hand be happy to leave Molineux with a point.

However, Olivier GlasnerThe men could easily have left the West Midlands with all three.

In the seven minutes between Chalobah’s opener and Larsen’s equalizer, Sarr missed two excellent chances to double his advantage, shooting from the center of the area then curling wide after a misplaced pass from Nelson Semedo.

They then thought they had won in stoppage time, but VAR upheld Anthony Taylor’s decision on the pitch to deny Mateta’s potential winner, penalizing Munoz for a collision with Sa.

Even though the Eagles have taken four points from their last two games, they could be feeling frustrated ahead of the matches against Fulham, Villa Aston And Newcastle United.

What leaders say:

Gary O’Neil: “Disappointed we didn’t get the upper hand. It was a bit slow, then they scored at a time when we were the better team. It was a soft goal following a defensive error and we didn’t really have want to cash in at that moment.”

Olivier Glasner: “I’m really proud of the team and the players for their performance today. It was the third game in six days. We should have taken the lead before half-time. We had two good chances after having brought the score to 1-0, we could see that the players were tired, the squad is very tight at the moment.
